NRA BASIC PISTOL COURSE
CAMP 2A instructors are certified to teach the National Rifle Association’s Basics of Pistol Shooting Course. This NRA Basic Pistol Course is designed for individuals who:
- Are new to pistols or are looking for a thorough refresher on how to safely handle and operate pistols.
OR
- Are taking this course as one of the requirements in becoming a Certified NRA Basic Pistol Instructor.
The course goal of NRA Basic Pistol is to teach the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning and operating a pistol safely.
Whether you are completely new to firearms, or have years of experience, you will learn and benefit from this course.
In this 8 hour (1 day) NRA Basic Pistol Course we will cover the following:
- The Fundamental Rules for Safe Gun Handling
- How to Store Firearms Safely
- The Different Types of Pistols
- Semi-Automatic Pistol Parts and How They Work
- The Semi-Automatic Cycle of Operation
- Revolver Parts and How They Work
- The Revolver Cycle of Operation
- Ammunition Fundamentals
- The Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting
- Pistol Shooting Positions
- Common Pistol Shooting Errors
- Common Pistol Malfunctions and How to Clear Stoppages
- Selecting a Pistol, Ammunition, and Accessories
- Cleaning and Maintaining Your Pistol
- Pistol Shooting Activities and Skill Development
The course format is a combination of:
Interactive Classroom Time
- Book and Slide Presentation Instruction (Learning materials will be provided)
- Practice Handling and Working with:
- Inert Guns (“Dummy Guns”)
- Laser Dry Fire Training Pistols (SIRT Guns)
- Unloaded (“Cleared”) Pistols and Inert Cartridges (Snap Caps & “Dummy Rounds”)
Gun Range Time
- Loading Live Ammunition
- Firing a Pistol at a Gun Range.
- Please note: A quality semi-automatic .22LR caliber target pistol with iron sights and ammunition will be provided to you for qualification at the range. Do not bring your own firearm or ammunition for qualification purposes.
- Please note: You will need to use eye and ear protection at the range. If you do not have eye and/or ear protection, both will be provided to you for qualification purposes.
Throughout the course, provided Chamber Flags will be used to encourage safe gun range habits and protocol.
Upon passing the NRA written test and passing the live fire NRA qualification requirement at the range, your instructor will submit your scores to the NRA via their website portal. You will receive your personalized NRA Basic Pistol Certificate by US Mail, which is normally delivered within 1 week after successful completion of the course.
** ATTENTION STUDENTS **
Before coming to class,
- DO NOT BRING YOUR FIREARM(S) OR AMMUNITION (neither off or on your person) INTO THE BUILDING OR CLASSROOM WHERE INSTRUCTION WILL BE TAKING PLACE.
- NO LIVE AMMUNITION IS ALLOWED, OR WILL BE USED IN ANY WAY, IN THE CLASSROOM DURING INSTRUCTION. This Requirement is to provide an additional layer of safety where firearms will be handled for instructive purposes inside a premises.
- Be sure to wear appropriate clothes and footwear to class and the gun range.
- For upper body: Tops should cover your shoulders, entire chest, and entire abdomen area (No tank tops, cut-offs, or crop tops).
- For lower body: Wear pants or wear shorts that cover your thighs.
- For feet: Wear footwear that fully covers your feet – both your toes and your heels – and are designed to be worn outdoors (No flip-flops, No sandals, and No slippers).
- Be sure to bring a legal form of Identification (Driver’s License, State ID, etc.). If you have a Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID), bring that card with you as well.
- If there is a medical condition or physical disability that the instructor should be aware of, please contact us prior to registering for class. We will make accommodating arrangements for individuals, provided that safety for themselves and others will not be compromised while performing the necessary course requirements.
- As you should already know, absolutely NO ALCOHOL OR DRUGS. Any substance that can alter or impair judgement, concentration, or coordination should in NO WAY be consumed or used prior to attending (or at any time during) this course. Any indications thereof will lead to the immediate removal of that individual from the course.
